Asikana, which translates to "We Start From Here," stands as a cooperative comprising over 100 small producers, or "outgrowers," situated in the Aira region of Ethiopia and its surrounding areas. Established in 2008, the cooperative has prioritized coffee quality and enhancement for its expanding roster of producing members. Yet, alongside this focus, Asikana places significant emphasis on environmental stewardship and sustainability.
Until shortly before the pandemic, Asikana, spearheaded by Bodja Gelalcha and managed by his family and a dedicated team, primarily functioned as a domestic entity. However, a strategic partnership with San Cristobal importers, previously centered on coffee production in Mexico, ushered in a new era of quality enhancement and global market recognition. San Cristobal's initiatives within Ethiopia have facilitated meticulous traceability of its coffee exports, a highly sought-after attribute for both buyers and growers. This transparency enables growers to enjoy fair compensation, reflecting the true value of their labour.
